The Cool Docks of the Shiliupu Pier is one of the first wharf areas in Shanghai and hence is of immense historic significance. MAA executed this project with its long-held supportive attitude toward historic buildings, and completed the layout according to a time line of “past, mirror and present”. In the first building (or the past building) the original facade is preserved, with the space re-arranged to include a luxury hotel as well as a “sky river view villa”, a revolutionary spatial form on the top floor. The second building (or the mirror building) adopts semi-transparent and semi-reflective materials, or building skins, to create an indoor space occupied by a distinctive restaurant be-sides an aquarium bar. While such reflective, transparent building materials provide an opaque interface to echo the “past and present” message conveyed by the first and third buildings, the second building uses a sky-bridge as a means of dramatically traveling along the timeline. The third building (or the present building), on the other hand, houses a one-of-a-kind performance theater that not only boasts vertical gardening in a continuous, 3-dimensional urban open space, but also reflects the commitment of contemporary architecture to urban planning and environmental concerns. This project allows people to develop an understanding/conception of “past, mirror and present” through route arrangement and an unprecedented space-use experience, thereby envisioning the future.
